I perform third-party (non-affiliated) service for Bose 901s in my shop.that's an absurdly high quote for those speakers. DIY audio is like building a fast car in your garage - you can get superb performance for a lot less than retail. If you like working on speakers, come by /r/diyaudio and you can build something excellent on the cheap. Drop by /r/audiophile for recommendations. If you aren't happy or want to try something else, someone will buy these and you can put that money towards other headphones or speakers. My advice would be to fix them and give them a listen. Some might give you a hard time because these are Bose speakers and Bose doesn't exactly have the best reputation in the audio world. Probably $40-$60 for the parts and another $10-$15 for a cheap soldering iron and solder. Capacitors and resistors age and change value over time and Bose doesn't use high end parts. Plus the kits usually are made of much better material than the original foam and won't deteriorate. Set aside a couple of weekends to DIY it. Refoaming is something a first-timer can do. If you just need to refoam, you'll find many kits with a Google search. It depends on whether the cones need replacing. Btw is this the correct sub reddit for this question? With my lack of knowledge would you pay to re-edge or should i try to do it myself? buying the kit and re-edging "looks" easy on youtube videos but i dont want to mess anything up (centering? Air gaps?). If you were me would you a) re-cone is it necessary? or b) just re-edge? Speaker Repair in Orange County, CA is quoting $702/set to re-cone which includes re-edge.
#Bose 901 iv equalizer drivers
this gentlemen said i could either 1) replace drivers 2) re-cone 3) re-edge. So in 20 years the foam is definitely shot as i saw foam piling up at the base of the cabinet. For perspective, i just learned the terms drivers, voice coil, etc a few months back.Ī helpful person on Facebook explained the 3 ways to repair these speakers (Bose 901s given to me by in-laws that have not been played in 20 years) these are Series IV. I have absolutely zero knowledge about anything speaker related. I have Bose 901s that are in need of re-edging.
